The advertised job
Hello Jarna, I have applied for the IPTS post and it does look really interesting. Could you tell me a bit more about what the research actually involves as these adverts areso brief.
Thanks
Kay

Hi Kay,
There are two outcome trials in the IPTS, one is a randomised control trial in CAT (cognitive analytic therapy) and the other one is/was DBT-trial (dialectical behaviour therapy). The DBT trial is nearly finished. if you would like more info, why don't you ring me in IPTS, I don't mind answering your questions. Good luck with your application!

I am quite confused by the object relations part of CAT and procedual Sequence Object Relations Model and was wondering if you could perhaps explain it a bit in case I am lucky enough to get an interview.
Jarna
Hi,
Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you, but I forgot to check this website this week...
I have to admit that I find the object relations bit of CAT very confusing as well and am not even going attempt to explain it as I really don't understand it myself! Re: procedural sequence model, I would recommend reading Chess Denman's article (2001) 'Cognitive-analytic therapy' in Advances in Psychiatric treatment (vol 7, pp 243-256). I found it quite clear account of CAT and it starts by explaining the procedural sequence model.
In my opinion, you really don't need to know about CAT in that much detail. I think it is enough to have a rough idea of what CAT entails but I wouldn't worry about the CAT-theory too much. Not understanding everything about CAT doesn't make a difference when you are carrying out the outcome research on CAT. After all, the therapists are doing all the CAT-work and you are collecting the data.
I'd say that the idea is to learn more about CAT, DBT and personality disorders while working here so in-depth knowledge beforehand is not essential.
I hope that helps a bit and puts your mind at ease. Good luck with it all!
